Samba and capoeira are two of the many things that Africans had brought over to Brazil in the 1500s during the slave trade that is now embraced by all Brazilians today. Capoeira is a martial art that Africans practiced to fight or protect themselves from their slave masters. In Brazil it was often the case that slaves revolted against their masters and they used capoeira to do so. Africans came up with away of disguising their practicing capoeira. They formed a circle called a roda that is consisted of people singing, playing instruments and dancing samba. The slaves sambaed to rhythmic drumming and singing portrayed just a performance to the slave masters. Due to the many revolts capoeira was outlawed all the way up 1937. Now capoeira and samba is practiced and embraced by black and white Brazilians as well as nonBrazilians around the world. I am proud to share this information because it is my history that I am proud of. My ancestors have contributed a lot to the culture of Brazilia. Though they do not get much credit for it and people will actually accredit their contributions to others, I want to honor the truth and my ancestors by publish my pride this month on tumblr.
